Allow me to introduce you to Donald Glover: writer, actor, comedian, musician, rapper, and all around hustleman. He has made his mark as an Emmy Award winning, hit show starring, movie scene stealing, rapping when not acting, Twitter movement making, media mogul of the current generation. You may know him as a writer on NBC’s 30 Rock, a star on NBC’s Community, as a member of comedy group Derrick Comedy, or as indie rapper Childish Gambino. At barebones he can only be described as a member of the new vanguard of slashies currently bearing the torch of cool.

REAL MEN LISTEN TO CHROMEO

With their third album, Business Casual, due for launch on the 19th of September, the URB HD team were able to get a quick sit down with the electrofunk duo and Next 100 alum, Dave 1 and P-Thugg otherwise known as Chromeo. After a slew of releases, remixes, and visual displays (try to catch that P-Thugg original t-shirt collab), they are poised to retake the dance floors, ear canals, and bandwidth of the cool hunting folks all over the world.

Catching up with the duo at the SF Outside Lands, the URB HD crew was hard pressed to really come up with the words to describe such a frenetically enthralled crowd of kids that packed the entire section of the venue to the brim. Opening the set up with their own impassioned take on the call and response portions of California Love, the Chromeo cats were able to work the crowd into an even greater frenzy of dancing, vibes, and all around cheer.

As industry veterans (watch the interview and you’ll see why), their maturity, knowledge (from hip hop heads to electronic saints), and know how come across as the tools that will carry the duo through the pop culture landscape for years to come.

After having the chance to spend some time in the space that is occupied by the incomparable Janelle Monae, it is easy to find yourself speechless when trying to describe the experience. Over the last few months, after being privy to a number of her performances, one comes to accept and understand the artisan level of perfection that Ms. Monae has brought to her music and art form. Deeply influenced by culture – past, present, and future – her visual and auditory identity has spurned comparisons to subjects as disparate as Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock to James Brown and Marlene Dietrich.

Having caught up with her during the California legs of her current tour schedule, we’ve finally compiled enough scene worthy displays of her showmanship and character to give you a taste of what can only be termed a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of performer.

The folks at URB HD present a Society Theory Original special edition Two Sides of Cool two-parter. Shot on location at the Paramount Theater in Oakland and at the SF Outside Lands Festival, Part 1 dives into her history and heretofore unseen or heard thoughts on her destiny and craft. Presented in a form that is inline with the style, character, and influence of Ms. Monae, both pieces were built out to harken back to the days of modern and classic film noir and serialized news reels.

REAL MEN LISTEN TO SLANDERCAT

This was waiting in my inbox this morning and after a few listens, I feel like you need to hear it too. Slandercat is a guy named Jeremy who builds obscure beats incorporating samples, vocals “and little squelchy sounds” – as he puts it. In the song “Return,” I could swear he samples the sound a truck makes when it’s backing up – but in this case I’m probably imagining it. Here’s the song “Elijah Runs” off his debut EP – which you can grab here. It kind of has a Fever Ray vibe.

URB x SOCIETY THEORY x THE STROKES

REAL MEN ARE ROCK STARS

As the first night of the SF Outside Lands drew to a close, music goers of mixed generations and ears began to converge on opposite sides of the festival venue. On one end of the park, a multi-generational crowd gathered to soak in what would be a 10 year anniversary of what remained of the Grateful Dead playing in Golden Gate Park. On the opposite end, a society, chock full of the energy and the lifeblood that drove the festival through its initial day, convened to be guided by the voices of the Strokes.

The term, ‘hot crowd’ could not begin to describe the convergence of energies brought on by such a surprising mix of event goers. This energy, which had built up through the day, when finally allowed to realize itself did so in an amazing fashion — the crowd acting and singing in unison whilst being skillfully played by maestro, Julian Casablancas and his ever maturing band of rock stars, The Strokes.

The french have a term (Mise-en-scène) used to describe the people, places, and things that tell a story within a scene. The written word could not justify the sights and sounds (and energy) of this performance and crowd, so the folks at URB HD decided to cut together a scene piece rather than let the words of a review fall short.
